Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. It can also cause inflammation of the tissue around the joints, as well as other organs in the body. The actual cause of this condition is still unknown. It usually affects the big joints of the body. Wrist, knee and hip joints are frequently affected. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs mostly in the middle age ranging between 30-60 years. Women are more susceptible to the disease than men
In some patients with rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation leads to the destruction of the cartilage, bone, and ligaments, causing deformity of the joints.
There is no test that can determine for sure whether you have RA. Most patients with RA will have some abnormal test results, although for some patients, all tests will be normal.
Two lab tests that often help in the diagnosis are:
Rheumatoid factor test
Anti-CCP antibody test
Other tests that may be done include:
Complete blood count
C-reactive protein
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate
Joint ultrasound or MRI
Joint x-rays
Synovial fluid analysis
